In backgammon, players roll a pair of six-sided dice at the start of each turn. As a result of the roll, the player gets an opportunity to move their checkers towards their inner table.

A player has to make two moves, one at a time, and they will have to move their dice depending on the numbers turned up on the dice. When a double is thrown, then the player will have to take four moves instead of two.

Does a player roll again after a double in backgammon? No, a player does not get to roll again after a double in backgammon. Instead of the normal two moves, the player is allowed to take four moves if they are legally possible.

All fours move must be taken if legally possible. A player cannot pass any of them and must take as many legal moves as they can in turn.

Any player who rolls a double must take the number indicated on the dice four times and the turns ends without rolling again. Answered below are frequently asked questions about rolling doubles in backgammon and what happens next.

Can you roll doubles in Backgammon?

Yes, a player can roll doubles in a backgammon game. A double happens in a backgammon game when a player rolls two identical numbers on the pair of six-sided dice.

When doubles appear on a roll, the player moves four times instead of twice. The player must use the numbers of the roll, but if there are no legal moves, the player can’t move and will have to forfeit their turn.

In an opening roll, the stake is doubled if a double roll is made and both players have to roll again. The players will repeat rolling until one player gets a higher throw than the opponent player.

Is there a limit to double in backgammon?

In a backgammon game, a player is not limited to the number of doubles they can roll. However, the only restriction is that a player is not allowed to double twice consecutively because gameplay is passed to the opponent player in between turns.

In an opening roll of the backgammon game, the stake is doubled if a double is made. And both players have to roll the dice again. If in the second roll still there is a double, another roll is made. The rolling will continue with no limitations until one player gets a higher number than the other.

But someone may ask, why is there no limit on the number of doubles made in backgammon, yet the highest number depicted is 64? In the backgammon game, stakes can raise to powers of 2 such as 128, 256 and the series can continue to the end.

However, there’s the “murphy rule” in the backgammon game, and a player can invoke the rule to set the maximum number an automatic double can be allowed during the game. However, the rule is agreed upon by the players before the game start.

Can you double blot in backgammon?

Yes, a player can hit two blots with a single checker in one turn.

If a player gets a double, and the number indicated on dice moves the player’s checker into a blot, the opponent checker will be knocked out of play, and the opponent will have to wait for their turn to roll dice and bring back that particular checker.

When a double roll is made while the checker knocked out is at the bar, when the number indicated on the dice takes back the checker into the player blot, the checker from the bar can knock out the player’s checker into the bar.

How do you move doubles in backgammon?

When a player rolls doubles, they get to move the same amount four times. For double sixes, four checkers get to move six spaces.

A player must take all four moves if they are legally possible, and a player cannot pass any of them. A player can move one checker four spaces four times, or move four checkers for four spaces each.
